Meet Dr Smitha Abraham MBBCH (Wits), FC RAD Onc (SA)
I am a Clinical Oncologist based in Richards Bay, dedicated to providing comprehensive, evidence-based cancer care to patients throughout Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
I completed my undergraduate medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) and my postgraduate specialist training in Clinical Oncology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
After establishing my private practice in Richards Bay in 2014, I founded the first oncology clinical trial site in Northern KwaZulu-Natal and continue to serve as the Principal Investigator for multiple clinical research studies. My involvement in clinical trials enables patients in the region to access innovative, cutting-edge cancer treatments without the need to travel to larger metropolitan centres.
My approach to cancer care is centred on providing personalised, holistic treatment tailored to each patient’s unique diagnosis and circumstances. By integrating systemic therapies—including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapies—with advanced radiation techniques such as Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), I strive to achieve the best possible clinical outcomes while maintaining quality of life throughout treatment.
I have a particular clinical interest in:
- Breast cancer
- Cervical and other gynaecological cancers
- HIV-associated malignancies
- Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers
I am committed to remaining at the forefront of oncology through ongoing professional development and active membership of leading oncology organisations, including the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), the South African Society of Clinical and Radiation Oncology (SASCRO), and the South African Oncology Consortium (SAOC).
